Writing is The Most Difficult Skill in Learning English

What comes to our mind when discussing about skills in learning a native language ? Lets take an example when we want to learn English . When we learn a language , there are four skills that we need for complete communication . We usually learn to listen first, then to speak, then to read, and finally to write. These are called “The Four Language Skills”. When discussing “The Four Language Skills” , I remember that once I heard “the most difficult skill in learning English is writing”. Do I think so ?

My answer is no doubt yes . Why ? In my opinion writing is considered is the most difficult skill and takes so much time of students to make it . Before we talk further what makes writing becomes difficult , I want to give a brief explanation about what is writing. According to Jonah (2006:29) writing is an ability which can be used as an indirect means of communication to others to convey information and this activity can be not as easy as well we know because in writing we strive to produce something new idea to our readers through our writing product.

Why it can be difficult ? Writing is also a way of knowing, a method of discovery and analysis. Of course because it is a process of discovering and analyzing something , it requires students adequate knowledge and the most important is their creativity to write something different. Then writing requires good grammar in order to produce a good writing especially for academic writing. A non-native person has to remember a large number of rules in structure which are quite different from their own language is pretty uneasy to do. In this case, students must figure out the most appriate grammar to use by themselves and even outline some rules to convert from their own language to the target language.The others problem like the limitation of students’ vocabulary , punctuation issues , Lack of sentence structure, and word usage also take a part why writing becomes difficult.

Some people say that writing is uneasy. Based on esl.about.com , they said that why is writing more difficult than speaking. First is written communication is more formal , means that writing in English needs to follow rules of grammar much more closely than in spoken English . Second is written language must be filtered through some sort of system, this system can be phonemic, structural or representative, etc which make students must not only learn to recognize the meaning of words orally, but also go through a process of transcribing these sounds.

From all of this I can conclude that writing especially produce a good writing is hard . They need our creativity , well knowledge about writing , and best effort in order to make something new in our writing. As we know writing is not only write but also transferring idea and also analyzing work. By always keep trying to write as much as we can , learn as much as we can , and also dont forget to focus on effort when writing , not outcome will help us to improve our ability in writing.
